From: Rick Wynn Subject: Re: Line Lancers Date: Wed, 30 Oct 96 20:03:22 CDT Regiments 7 and 8 of the Line Lancers were the ex-Vistula Lancers, so redesignated in April 1811. Their uniform was a blue uniform similar in cut to that of the Guard Lancers. The 7th had yellow lapels, collar, turnbacks, and trouser stripe. White-and-blue striped girdle. Czapska has blue top with brass plate on front; Knötel shows a yellow-tipped black plume and white cords. Epaulettes are white. Horse furniture is white sheepskin shabraque (like the Line Lancers 1-6), with yellow wolfs-teeth, and blue portmanteau with yellow lace. Lance has white over red pennon. Regiment 8 is similar, except that lapels, collar, and turnbacks were blue piped yellow. Knötel's print shows no epaulettes, only blue shoulder straps piped yellow, and no plume, only a red carrot-shaped pompon. Trumpeters for both regiments have yellow coats with blue lapels and turnbacks, yellow cuffs and collar piped blue, blue trousers with yellow stripe, and yellow-topped czapskas with white plumes. Shabraque is black sheepskin. Trumpeters mounted on greys as usual. Both 7th and 8th Regiments have white metal buttons, and steel scabbards. Regiment 9 of the Line Lancers was formed in 1811 from various formations, principally Hanoverian. I understand that the uniform of this outfit is the subject of some controversy. Knötel shows a Polish-style uniform with green coat with buff-colored lapels, collar and turnbacks. Red trousers with green stripes. Red czapska with white metal plate and white pompon. White metal buttons. Horse furniture is blanket with pointed ends (like Guard lancers), red with green lace. Portmanteau also red, laced green. Lance pennon buff over white. Apparently the regiment was re-equipped with blue coats by 1813, although the red trousers were retained for awhile. Knötel's print of an officer of the 9th in 1813 shows blue coat and Hungarian-style breeches, and blue shabraque and portmanteau, all laced in silver. White plume and cords on red czpaska. According to Painting Guide to Napoleonics by John Rafferty; the 7th and 8th were originally the Polish guard lancers, converted to the 7th & 8th on the 18th of june 1811. The 7th wore blue faced in crimson. The 8th wore scarlet faced in blue. The 9th was had a standard uniform with facings in buff.
