Answers:
Part 1 - General Information and Availability
- 1.1) Who can use reality?
Anyone Who was ever employeed by SGI. Children, and other family members can have a page under the the page of the person who is the SGI employee. So my son Jarrod can have a page whose URL will be http://reality.sgi.com/trant/jarrod/
- 1.2) How do I get a (web-space) account on reality?
Send email to reality-account@confusedhacker.com to request an account; include your name, employee ID #, and requested account name.
- 1.3) What do I need to get started?
A text editor and a ftp program are about all you need. Of course there are alternatives to the text editor.
- 1.4) Can my Significant Other, and/or children have a page?
Children, and other family members can have a page under the the page of the person who is the SGI employee. So my son Jarrod can have a page whose URL will be http://reality.sgi.com/trant/jarrod/
- 1.5) How much space can I use?
That all depends on how much space is available on reality. Disks are cheap, but not that cheap and installing them requires downtime. So please try to keep it to a reasonable limit. If everyone starts using 100's of megabytes We will be forced to institute some form of quota system. Lets please keep it below that threshold.
- 1.6) Can I use cgi-bin scripts
Yes you can. You should name them .cgi so the server knows they are to be executed. It is your responsiblity to test them prior to installing them on reality, since problems with your scripts could wipe out other peoples pages, compromise the system security, or just cause the system to choke on its own data.
- 1.7) Can I use access control on my pages?
Not at this time, but we're still working on it.
- 1.8) How do I add counters to my page?
There are plenty of good counters available on the web.
- 1.9) Can I login to Reality?
No. Login accounts are not needed and since the reality site is now outside of the sgi firewall, the security risks are too great. Access to reality from outside is limited to ftp and http processes.
- 1.10) Can I login to reality from outside SGI's firewall?
No. Access to reality from outside is limited to ftp and http processes.
- 1.11) Is ftp available on reality?
Yes. You can use any ftp program to access your directory on reality. Make sure to use a proxy server when you upload files from within the sgi fire-wall.
- 1.12) What material can I post on reality?
Here are the rules.
- A: Nothing Pornographic
- B: Nothing business related
- C: Nothing copyrighted, unless you have written permission from the owner.
If it isn't listed above its probably ok to place there.
Part 2 - Informational Sources
- 2.1) Is there a mailing list for this server?
Yes, go to http://reality.sgiweb.org/cgi-bin/mj_wwwusr to subscribe.
Part 3 - Trouble shooting
- 3.1) Why does my homepage look different on Reality, then on my desktop server?
This could be due to differences between your desktop server and reality, or it could be because you didn't use relative paths in your html pages.
