If you're going to put all your eggs in one basket, you need a basket...

If you look back through my "car mess" pictures from the various contests, you'll see that I've been through a few iterations of trying to find a good mounting for radios and transverters:

While working recently on the recent replacement of my 902 transverter, I got thinking of how to stack transverters in my car so I have better access to the RF connectors and better cooling. I took some measurements of the car and transverters and went looking for a new bookcase. During my search, I was reminded of KM0T's June 2005 shack rebuild, where Mike created a bookshelf for all his low-band radios called the "TCSTD". I got thinking, gee, that's something I could use.

Menards has wire shelves like Mike's that are 18" x 18" for $9 each. The shortest poles are 3', which it turns out is too high for my car. I considered the shelves but was concerned that 18" was too wide for how I've been setting up in my car. It probably would've worked out inside, but I'm not sure how it would go through the car door.

Instead, I bought some 1/2" PVC and wire racks. I spent a few hours in the garage drilling, cutting and fileing, and the result is this:

It looks good, but is just a little large (about 2") to go in the car conveniently (this is why there aren't two bars across the top).

There were two styles of Rubbermaid shelving. I bought the cheap stuff, for linnen closets. It's probably not as strong as the (more expensive) garage shelving.

A day or so after building this, I completed building DEMI 902 transverter and amplifier kits, only to realise the two together are 6" high, and my wire racks are 6" center-to-center. I'm 1/4" short. I expect that I'll cut it just above the 3rd shelf (the 4th shelf was more of a "top" and "expansion" shelf) and put "T"s on so the top shelf can be added later. The "T"s will give me the additonal space I need for stacking, or the flexibility to adjust the top shelf so that there is space.
