MSCA Calder Sprints 16 July 2006
After the rain on Saturday and the forecast for more on Sunday you had to be a bit of an optimist to head out to Calder at 7.00 AM. But about 60 hardy souls did, including three from the AHSDC. Obviously the bridge too far away was better option!!
Scott Burgess had the only Sprite there, and also had the worst cold there. He did his paperwork, then knelt in puddle to unload his car, then sneezed. This caused a rush of blood to the brain, followed by an attack of common sense. He went home.
Robin Browning and Owen Crombie we not afflicted by ‘le grippe’, and also had the advantage of driving white cars with roofs, the Turbo Mazda RX3 4 door and the Cortina Mk 1, 2 door respectively.
Both were obviously possessed of a little prescience too: as the day went on the track got drier and drier, not before a Clubman and a Nissan 200SX had spun off the main straight and hit a wall.
Yes, Calder is that kind of track, if its rained, and if there have been drags in the last century, the front straight gets VERY slippery.
Any way, undaunted by all this Robin started off lapping cautiously on the wet track in the morning at a sensible minute 29 seconds, but as the day wore on got down to a blistering minute 9 seconds, enough to win the Non Marque 3500cc and over class.
FTD was by Gordon Lovegrove in a Porsche: minute 8 seconds.
Owen Crombie was also suitable sensible, starting the day with a minute 30 lap, and then finally getting down to a minute 20 lap, he also won Class R, mostly because any real racing cars were too scared to compete with a Cortina.
We can conclude from this that newer cars with extra doors are faster, and that if you want a trophy you’d better not mess with AHSDC drivers who have either avoided buying a Sprite in the first place, or left it at home.
We got 5 timed runs in on the day, which was great, another terrific day put together by MSCA.
