Battling Bastards

Tearing a webpage from Kaiser Penguin's outstanding cocktail comparison posts, like this one, I decided to evaluate a couple of different recipes for the classic exotic cocktail, the Suffering Bastard.

Accounts differ, but the Suffering Bastard was probably created in the early 20th century at the Shepherd's Hotel in Cairo, Egypt. At first, it was called the Suffering Bar Steward, but the local British officers misheard it, and began asking for a Suffering Bastard instead, so the name stuck. The original recipe called for either brandy and gin, or bourbon and gin, mixed with lime juice, ginger beer, and bitters.

I made the recipe in Beachbum Berry's Grog Log first, which appears to be very close to the original:

1 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
4 oz. Chilled Ginger Beer
1 oz. Bourbon (Knob Creek)
1 oz. Gin (Hendrick's)
1 dash Angostura Bitters

Pour all ingredients into a double old-fashioned glass and fill with ice cubes. Stir well, then garnish with mint sprig and an orange wheel speared with a maraschino cherry.

This is a damn fine cocktail. I'm surprised it's taken me this long to whip one up. The ginger ale and lime juice balance the gin and bourbon perfectly, and a dash of bitters gives it just the right hint of spice. I'm usually not a big fan of bourbon in cocktails (or anywhere else for that matter), but this changed my mind completely. I think it's destined to become a personal favorite.

The second recipe comes from Beachbum Berry's Sippin Safari, and subs Coca Cola and brandy for the Ginger Ale and Bourbon in the Grog Log version. This variation was created by Hank Riddle, a half-Phillipino, half-American protégé of Don the Beachcomber.

3/4 oz. Rose's Lime Juice (I hate Rose's, so I used fresh-squeezed again)
1/2 oz. Simple Syrup (I used my homemade Demerara Cane syrup)
1/2 oz. Gin (Hendrick's again)
1 oz. Brandy (Paul Masson V.S.O.P.)
1 oz. Coca Cola
3 dashes Angostura Bitters

Shake well with ice cubes, then pour into a double old-fashioned glass and fill with ice cubes. Garnish with mint sprig and an orange wheel speared with a maraschino cherry.

This is also a very good drink, but it lacks the complexity of the first, and is a bit sweeter, although not overpoweringly so, and the aromatics in the gin are not as noticeable. I found the brandy to be an unsatisfactory substitute for the bourbon, and also preferred the spicy edge of the ginger beer in the original recipe, to the all-too familiar taste of Coke in this variant.

I found a 3rd recipe in Trader Vic's Pacific Island Cookbook. This variation has absolutely no relationship to the Cairo Hotel cocktail, and is in fact, simply a Mai Tai with an extra ounce of rum and a cucumber slice added for garnish. This points up a common problem I've encountered with TV cocktail recipes...they all seem to be largely interchangeable. Since I've had plenty of Mai Tais, I decided to skip it and take the above photo, showing the Hank Riddle Bastard served in a TV old-fashioned glass, next to the iconic Trader Vic's Suffering Bastard decanter (actually a Tiki Farm replica) instead.

So there you have it. The 100-year old original is still the winner by far. Now I'm off to fire up the grill and prep a couple of thick, juicy T-bones for dinner tonight.

A Little Night Tiki Photography

I whipped up an authentic Trader Vic's Navy Grog tonight, and tried my hand at making a shaved-ice cone with a straw stuck through the middle. Then I got out the old camera tripod, and took a few cocktail/mug photos down in the Hai'deaway.

The incredible Datajunkie has done it again: a virtual comic-book "spinner" rack filled with full PDF scans of 12 classic Gold Key Comics, including issues of Boris Karloff's Thriller, The Mighty Samson, Turok, Son of Stone, and my favorite, The Man From Uncle.

Kapu Kai and Mai Tai Pie

Here are a few photos from I, Zombie's luau last night in Minneapolis. We met a lot of nice folks and had a great time. The food and drink were excellent. We contributed a Mai Tai Pie, made from the recipe in Beachbum Berry's Taboo Table. It was a big hit.

The highlight of the evening was the unveiling of an original Witco fountain from the old Kapu Kai restaurant in Cucamunga, CA:

If you have any interest at all in Tiki, then you've probably visited Humuhumu's Critiki website at least once. I use it every time I travel, and rely on it heavily when attempting to locate Polynesian Pop venues in the vicinity of my destination. It's proved to be a truly indispensable tool over the years.

Humu has just completed a major update to the site's look and feel, that should provide a significant improvement in performance and ease of use. This is something she does for free, out of her love for all things PolyPop, so be sure to stop by and thank her if you use the site. If you've never been there before, go check it out!

I've posted previously about the 1954 jungle-adventure film, Secret of the Incas, featuring Charlton Heston as a fedora- and leather jacket-clad adventurer searching for treasure in Macchu Picchu, and exotic songstress, Yma Sumac, as an Incan princess.

Several of the film's plot points, along with Heston's character, were lifted wholesale by Steven Speilberg and George Lucas for their Indiana Jones films (without credit), and Paramount has so far refused to give it a proper release on DVD, although you can purchase a copy from Yammering Magpie Cinema.

U.K. fan, James Bryne has also created a great tribute site to Secret of the Incas, that includes an extensive collection of film clips, screencaps, press kits, and posters. He loved the movie so much, he even took a trip to Peru in 2007 to trace Heston's footsteps through the Andes.

Ride the Tragic Roundabout

How could I have lived this long, unaware of the existence of the Magic Roundabout, a series of 5 small, inner roundabouts inside a larger one, located near Swindon in the U.K.? How could such a monstrous perversion of traffic safety ever have been conceived, let alone constructed? How....HOW?!

Now, thanks to the Ministry of Propaganda, we can all go for a virtual ride on the Magic Roundabout, and toss our biscuits.

Havana Before Castro

I just received my copy of Havana Before Castro, a wonderful new book by architect, Peter Moruzzi, that "through vintage and contemporary photographs, brochures, and artifacts evocative of time and place...tells the story of the city that was the most popular exotic destination for Americans during the forty years between World War I and Castro’s revolution." At the official website, you can preview many of the book's fantastic mid-century illustrations, like this one:

I'd love to visit Havana some day, and hope that when I do, it's people won't be ruled by thugs, communist or otherwise.

Not Necessarily Based on a True Story

Chasing the Frog: a website devoted to uncovering the truth about movies that claim to be based on true stories...a topic that happens to be one of my biggest cinematic pet peeves.

Shown above: the unfunny Robin Williams as Patch Adams with his unfunny real-life counterpart.
